STATEMENT BY GEORGE PARKER, PRESIDENT
WASHINGTON TEACHERS UNION
ON BONUSES PAID TO FAVORED CITY EMPLOYEES
The Washington Examiner today reported that the Fenty Administration has paid over $15 million in bonuses to select city employees, even as D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) has cited budget shortfalls as the reason for the dismissal of 388 DCPS employees.
WASHINGTON- Tough economic times call for sacrifices and shared responsibility from all parties, but apparently this concept doesn't apply to Mayor Fenty. Today's Washington Examiner story that the Mayor handed out $15 million in bonuses over the past three years to favorite city employees is outrageous. The payment of these bonuses should offend all citizens of the District of Columbia, given the fact that Mayor Fenty and DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee used a budget crisis as the excuse to fire 388 D.C. teachers and school staff, creating a major disruption in the education of many of our most vulnerable students. The district government needs a better system of checks and balances to ensure the implementation of sound fiscal management and policies, especially in the current economy.
